When a PCB antenna for Bluetooth device is the right choice?

For Bluetooth device designers, a Bluetooth PCB trace antenna, also called a PCB antenna, microstrip antenna, or printed circuit board antenna, is rarely a trivial decision. On paper, this option offers no BOM(bill of material) cost, no connectors, and no external parts.

But in real products, antenna performance is defined by integration, not by the antenna geometry alone.

In this article, we break down when a PCB antenna for Bluetooth is the right choice, when it becomes a risk, and what hardware teams should evaluate early, especially for industrial and B2B products where reliability, range, and predictability matter more than up front cost.

What Do We Mean by a PCB Trace Antenna?

A PCB trace antenna is an antenna formed directly from copper on the PCB, typically as an inverted‑F antenna (IFA), meandered monopole, or loop structure. Unlike chip or external antennas, the PCB itself is the only radiating structure.
Common terms you’ll see used interchangeably include:

PCB antenna
PCB trace antenna
Printed antenna
Microstrip antenna
Integrated PCB antenna

From a manufacturing perspective, the appeal is obvious: zero component cost and full control over geometry.

From an RF perspective, it comes with strict constraints.

When a PCB Antenna Is a Good Choice for Bluetooth

A PCB antenna can be an excellent solution when the following conditions are met.

1. The Product Has a Stable and Predictable Mechanical Design

PCB antennas are highly sensitive to their environment. They work best when:

The enclosure material is known and fixed early
There are no large metal parts close to the antenna
Battery size and location are locked early
Cable routing and displays are well defined

This is often the case in industrial sensors, gateways, and fixed installations, where the form factor doesn’t change between revisions.
If the mechanical design is still evolving, a PCB antenna has to evolve with it.

2. Bluetooth Range Requirements Are Moderate and Well Defined

For many Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) devices, the goal isn’t maximum range. It’s consistent and predictable coverage.
PCB trace antennas are well suited when:

Required range is known and validated early
Link margin is reasonable (not operating at sensitivity limits)
The device does not rely on extreme orientations or edge‑case scenarios

For professional products, repeatability is often more important than peak performance. For peak performance there are other options available such as flex or LDS.

3. You Control the Entire PCB Stack‑Up and Layout

A PCB antenna is not a drop‑in element. Its performance depends on:

Ground plane size and shape
Layer stack‑up and materials
Nearby components and cut‑outs
Feed routing and matching network

If your team controls the full PCB layout, and can reserve sufficient keep‑out area, a printed Bluetooth antenna can be tuned very precisely. This is where PCB antennas outperform many commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) alternatives.

4. Total Cost, Reliability, and Manufacturability Matter More Upfront Cost

Because there are no connectors, springs, or cables, on‑board antennas offer:

Excellent mechanical robustness
Fewer assembly failure points
Lower long‑term cost at scale

For industrial and B2B products shipped over many years, this can be a decisive advantage.

When a PCB Antenna Becomes the Wrong Choice

Just as important is knowing when not to use a Bluetooth PCB trace antenna.

Compact Devices With Metal or High‑Density Mechanics

In small devices with batteries, displays, or metal housings, PCB antennas don't have the space once the final mechanics are added.
What looks good on a bare PCB can fail badly in the real product.
This is a common root cause of late‑stage Bluetooth performance issues.

Products Requiring Very High Ranging or Measurement Accuracy

For standard Bluetooth communication, metrics like efficiency and gain are often enough.
But for advanced use cases, such as Bluetooth Channel Sounding, antenna behavior across frequency and angle becomes critical.
Channel Sounding performance depends heavily on antenna group delay stability, not just matching or efficiency. Many PCB antennas or COTS antennas that work “fine” for communication are not suitable once precise ranging is required.

Designs Expecting Easy Antenna Reuse Across Products

A PCB antenna is not portable between products. Even small layout, stackup or enclosure changes can invalidate previous tuning.
If your roadmap includes multiple form factors or variants, a custom PCB antenna may increase long‑term engineering effort unless managed carefully from the start.

PCB Antennas and Bluetooth Channel Sounding: A Special Case

With Bluetooth 6.0 introducing Channel Sounding, antenna design moves from being “good enough” to being fundamental system performance.
Accurate ranging requires:

Stable phase response
Low group delay variation
Controlled radiation nulls across orientations

The Bluetooth Channel Sounding whitepaper shows that bluetooth antennas performing well on bare PCBs can fail completely once integrated into real devices—and that redesigning the antenna specifically for the final product is often required.
This is where early antenna decisions have huge impact.

Practical Takeaway for Hardware Teams

A Bluetooth PCB trace antenna is the right choice when:

Mechanics are stable and well understood
Bluetooth performance targets are realistic
You control the PCB layout and stack‑up
Reliability and total cost matter more than up-front cost

It becomes risky when:

The product is very compact or metal‑heavy
Late mechanical changes are expected
You need highly accurate ranging or positioning
The antenna is treated as an afterthought

In other words: Bluetooth PCB antennas reward early, system‑level thinking—and punish late fixes.

Reliable wireless connectivity is arguably the most important feature for IoT devices. When developing an IoT device, one or more antennas must be chosen for the device. With a large number of antennas available on the market, it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the amount of options.

This is a common challenge many of our customers have faced. With constraints spanning size, cost, performance, and application requirements, selecting the optimal antenna has become a very complex decision in IoT development.

This article will guide you through the process of selecting the best antenna solution for your product. To make things easier, we will approach the problem from the perspective of an example device. Our example device is battery-powered with LoRa connectivity and global satellite navigation via GNSS. The device features a plastic casing with metal sections and is designed to be portable. We will focus on choosing between off-the-shelf antennas and custom antenna design.

Decision between off-the-shelf vs. custom antenna design

In our earlier blog post, we discussed differences between off-the-shelf antennas and custom antenna design. Here, we will start the process of choosing an antenna from the perspective of different device categories. Here are three device categories that have major effects in the choice of antennas:

Indoor and outdoor fixed devices

Little to no change in environment around antenna
Less strict size limitations: easier to align with design rules
No batteries: easier antenna integration
Example product: IoT gateway, Wi-Fi access point

Recommended solution: off-the-shelf antenna

Portable devices, wearables

Changing environment around antenna, multiple use cases
Smaller device size: challenging for antenna integration
Placement of battery and other components can affect antenna performance
Antennas should be omnidirectional to work in all orientations
Example product: IoT asset tracker, smartwatch

Recommended solutions: compact ceramic antenna, custom antenna design

Devices with metallic casing and other materials

Metal surfaces can detune antenna and decrease total efficiency
With custom antenna design, antenna performance can be equal or even better than without metal in the casing
Other materials such as plastics must be considered in antenna design
Example product: IoT industrial sensors, premium consumer devices with metal construction

Selecting the optimal antenna step-by-step

Step 1 - Use case

Selecting the antenna for your product starts by determining its intended environment and use case. With our example device, we are operating in many different use cases, as portability means the device could be on a desk, inside a vehicle, on a charging dock or perhaps close to the human body. The device’s antennas should work in all these use cases, which must be considered in antenna tuning. This affects clearances for the antenna as well as the antenna tuning circuit. Due to the size constraints of the device and space requirements for LoRa antennas, custom antenna design should be considered for our example device.

Step 2 - Orientation

Because our device varies in orientation, directive antennas are not suitable as the resulting narrow beam will not always be properly aligned towards the intended direction. This is especially important with portable devices featuring satellite navigation where good coverage towards the sky is required. This rules out hemispherically receiving off-the-shelf GNSS patch antennas for portable devices and wearables. This does not exclude all off-the-shelf solutions: there are numerous off-the-shelf GNSS antennas which receive omnidirectionally. However, combined with the constrained size requirement, a custom GNSS antenna design is the recommended choice for our example device. Furthermore, designing one custom antenna for a device lowers the design effort for additional custom antennas.

Step 3 - Other components

In addition to the use cases, the components of the device itself affect the antenna. Devices with metallic surfaces are especially important to consider when choosing the antenna. This includes components like large displays, metallic sections on the casing, other PCBs near the antenna, and batteries. When clearances are sufficiently small, metallic surfaces close to the antenna affect its performance such as gain and efficiency. Custom antennas excel in this type of environment: with clever antenna design, the effect of metal surfaces can be mitigated, and in some cases, even used to provide benefits! Our device’s metallic case and portable form-factor further reinforce the choice to go for a custom antenna design.

Final words

A Christmas celebration 2025, 10 years in the making

Much of our progress at Radientum is visible in the work we do and the challenges we solve. But every now and then, it's worth stepping out of the usual rhythm to celebrate the people behind it all.

On December 4th, 2025, we did just that. We brought together our Christmas celebration and Radientum's 10-year anniversary into a full day spent together.

Looking back just enough to appreciate the journey and enjoying where we are today.

Morning alignment: teamwork, games, and shared energy

We started the day at our Hervanta office with almost the entire team present. The atmosphere was relaxed and expectant. No rush, no strict agenda, just time set aside to be together.

One of our account managers, Tao, had prepared a set of team activities that leaned into problem-solving, creativity, and collaboration. Teams formed quickly, ideas bounced around the room, and friendly competition emerged without taking itself too seriously. You could say the teams were working on the same frequency.

Between activities, board games made their way onto tables, snacks disappeared steadily, and conversations flowed easily. It was one of those mornings where time moves quickly because everyone is genuinely engaged. No impedance matching needed for these connections.

Switching modes: from office to evening celebration

Later in the afternoon, it was time to change pace and setting. As we moved toward the evening celebration, the tone shifted.

Suits and dresses replaced everyday office wear, and by the time everyone arrived, we were dressed to the nines. The change marked the occasion clearly. This was a moment worth pausing for.

Reflections and recognition

The evening program opened with speeches and reflections from several people, including our CEOs past and present, Mikko Parkkila and Jukka Sjöstedt.

Rather than dwelling on milestones or numbers, the reflections centered on shared experiences, long-term collaboration, and the many individuals who have shaped Radientum over the past decade. There was gratitude, perspective, and a clear sense of continuity between where the company started and where it stands today.

Ten years is a long time in any industry. It's long enough to see technology change, markets shift, and teams evolve. What hasn't changed is the commitment to doing excellent work and supporting each other along the way. That's the signal that carries through.

Before dinner, we paused for a particularly meaningful moment. An honorary medal was presented to Timo Yli-Pietilä, recognizing his long career and deep expertise in EMC. It was a calm, respectful acknowledgment of a professional journey built on decades of commitment and knowledge—the kind of dedication that sets the standard for all of us.

A Christmas feast

Dinner followed in full Christmas spirit. A generous buffet of traditional holiday dishes filled the room, and there was no shortage of anything. Plates were filled generously, conversations stretched across tables, and the atmosphere remained warm and unhurried.

Fruits, cheeses, and chocolate rounded out the meal, ensuring no one left the table too early. The feast was worth lingering over.

The first-ever Radientum Awards

After dinner, we introduced something completely new: the Radientum Awards.

These were not formal corporate accolades, but playful and thoughtful recognitions for contributions that don't always come with titles or headlines. Categories included Designer of the Year, Task Master of the Year, and the unmistakable Mr. Iron Calves, awarded for logging the most cycling kilometers over the year.

There were many awards, plenty of laughter, and genuine appreciation behind each one. Recognitions felt personal and well-earned.

Following the awards, Christmas gifts were handed out to everyone. A small but meaningful way to close the official program and thank the team for the year behind us.

Late signals still transmitting

With the formalities wrapped up, the evening shifted naturally into a more informal mode. Conversations continued, groups re-formed, and the celebration carried on without needing much structure.

As usual, some parts of the night are best left undocumented...

Looking ahead

A decade is both a milestone and a starting point. It's proof that something works, that a vision can take root and grow, and that the right people can build something lasting together.

Bringing together Christmas and our 10-year anniversary gave us space to reflect, appreciate, and reset before the year's end. It reminded us that the work we do matters, but so do the moments we share doing it.

3D-Printed Antennas: A Game-Changer for RF Prototyping and Lightweight Designs

3D printing or additive manufacturing has been around since 1980s. At first, it was seen as a way for fast prototyping. In recent years, it has been increasingly popular manufacturing method in a wide range of commercial and industrial applications. In general, 3D printing refers to methods where a component/part or even a product is built by adding material layer by layer. Some of the common techniques include FDM (fused deposition modelling), SLA (stereolithography), and SLM (selective laser melting).

Recently, antenna and RF community has studied 3D printing as a fabrication method, and it is seen as a viable option, for example, in aerospace applications. The antenna types vary from planar antennas to horns, dielectric lenses, and resonators. Some of the materials used include different plastics, ceramics, and metals. The utilized frequency ranges for 3D printed antennas range from sub-6 GHz all the way to millimetre wave bands such as Ku and Ka bands.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Antenna 3D Printing

As with all manufacturing methods, additive manufacturing of antennas has its advantages and disadvantages some of which are listed below.

Advantages of 3D printed antennas

3D printed antennas are fast for prototyping, especially with in-house printers, as the printing process as a whole can be faster when compared to CNC milling or injection moulding processes. Furthermore, it may be more cost-effective to 3D print antennas if small batches are required. For example, injection moulding requires the design and fabrication of a proper mould which may be relatively costly for small manufacturing quantities.

Depending on the complexity of the design, CNC milling may require several laborious steps, but 3D printing can potentially handle the production of a complex part with a single printing process. And in some cases, 3D printing may enable shapes and geometries that are difficult to produce with other technologies. However, it is case dependent if 3D printing can provide cost and time benefits compared to more conventional manufacturing technologies. As a general rule, mechanically more complex designs are likely better suited for fabrication with 3D printing.

One of the advantages of 3D printing is that it enables lightweight structures. This is one of the reasons for its popularity in aerospace applications. For example, a fully metallic horn antenna can be manufactured using plastic which is metallized to achieve suitable RF-performance, or metal printed antenna can purposefully have voids to decrease weight. Printing lightweight structures also effectively utilizes the printing material as there is no need to remove material.

The downsides of 3D printing antennas

There are also some constraints for 3D printed antennas. The 3D printed antennas have a limited size due to the printing process. Therefore, some electrically large structures or low-frequency applications might not be possible with a single printing process.

Another disadvantage is the accuracy that the printing process can produce. Accuracy denotes both the capability to produce tiny details and the how smooth the surfaces are. Traditional manufacturing technologies typically yield designs with better accuracy. Reduced surface accuracy has detrimental effect to the antenna performance, being typically more significant issue at higher frequencies.

Lastly, 3D printing has more limited selection of materials that have desired mechanical and electrical properties. Mass production is limited with 3D printing as well but on the contrary, it enables agile and fast changes in the production.

3D Printed Antennas

Both academia and industry have been interested in 3D printed antennas or at least using 3D printing as part of antenna manufacturing. The typical materials used in printing incorporate different plastics (PLA, ABS), ceramics and metals. Some of the manufactured antenna designs may require post-processing such as surface polishing or metallization.

Since printing allows 3D shapes, it is no surprise that it has been used for manufacturing dielectric lenses and resonators, horn antennas, dielectric reflector arrays, and complex 3D antenna shapes. Also, planar antennas have been demonstrated with 3D printing technology.

Dielectric lenses and resonators do not necessarily require metallization which may allow a simple printing process. The process also allows to control the permittivity of the lenses and resonators while using a single material. The permittivity can be varied to some extent with infill ratio, which refers to how much of the structure is filled with the material. When infill ratio is decreased the printed design contains more voids filled with air. This effectively decreases the effective permittivity.

Metallic horn antennas have been demonstrated using different 3D printing techniques. Horn antenna can be made lightweight by printing it from plastic. However, this requires metallization of the surface to enable RF-performance. Metallization can be achieved by utilizing a few different techniques. Antenna can be coated with metallic ink/paint using airbrush, for example. However, metallic inks/paints tend to have limited conductivity compared to solid metals. Conductivity may be improved by electrodepositing another metal layer on top of the metallic ink/paint. Even after another metallization it is typical that the achieved metal is more lossy than for example a typical PCB trace. If lightweight structures are not essential, horn antennas can be directly printed from metal alloys such as aluminium alloys. Direct metal printing can be achieved by, for example, using SLM which has metal as powdered substance which is melted with a laser.

Radientum and 3D antenna printing

We here at Radientum are always looking for the most effective ways to help our partners bring better-performing antennas to market. This is also why we have investigated 3D printing as a manufacturing technology. Figure 3 below, shows different horn antennas and a horn antenna array that were manufactured using metallic 3D printing technology. The metallic horn manufacturing was done by a service provider specialized in 3D printing. The smooth and corrugated horn antennas operate on Ku-band (12-18 GHz), and they were printed as single piece structures. The Ka-band (26.6-40 GHz) array was printed in two parts which were attached together with screws. Making a simulation model of 3D printed structures is more difficult than traditional materials since the material properties are not well known and may also depend on the printing process. For example, the simulation model usually does not include surface features of the printed antenna coming from printing process. These surface features may decrease antenna efficiency, for example. Although the designed Ku- and Ka-band antennas were simulated with smooth surfaces, the simulated gain matches well with the measured one for both Ku- and Ka-band antennas. The deviation was around 1-2 dB suggesting that the surface features do not significantly affect horn antenna efficiency.
