Why EMC & EMI measurements?

Internal or external noise can block RF transmission making radio link unreliable. RF desensing is not detected in standard approval tests. However, some operators and end customers require that receiver sensitivity is tested against specified limits in selected use cases. Desensing can be very time consuming and costly to find and fix, especially if products are already in use. Own RF transmission can also disturb some functionality in the product itself, such as sensor data accuracy, increase of spurious emissions (EMC issue) or even cause unpredictable booting.

RF desensing

You have a vision of a wireless product. So, you know how the product should look like, what materials will be used, what’s the desired connectivity experience, and more. The first thing is to find out how these requirements affect antenna design and is the vision realistic. Feasibility Study enables you to do just that!

The feasibility study is the first step of the antenna design journey. It verifies that your product plan and connectivity requirements are feasible from the antenna design perspective. With simulation, we can verify that it is indeed possible to implement an antenna that can deliver the desired RF performance. Which wireless technologies can be used: LTE, NF, Bluetooth, etc.?

A proper feasibility study is your final reality check. Now you can fine-tune the project plan, timing, and budget, and safely advance to the next design phase – Antenna Concepting.

Check and improve radio link performance of your product

Our solution to avoid RF desensing is to check the design at product concepting or latest in early prototyping phase. Checking includes detecting risk for noise couplings and options to avoid RF desensing. In prototyping phase, we can measure RF sensitivity in our RF shielded room, where also the root cause can be revealed, and performance of the improvement checked. We use radio communication tester to control the radio interface and measure sensitivity at target bit error rate (BER).

3D EM simulation are often used with measurements because it is powerful tool to analyze what is the coupling level in critical locations and what need to be done for improvements. Simulation are also excellent utility in understanding the root cause in case of RF desensing.

  • Design for reduced electromagnetic interferences (EMI)
  • RF desensing analysis – 3D EM simulation, design inspection & measurements
  • BER measurements (2G, 3G and LTE)
