Extronics’ Quest for Reliable Long-Distance Communication in process industry environments
When Extronics, a leader in hazardous area industrial wireless solutions and IoT devices, faced the challenge of developing a wearable LoRaWAN connected worker safety tag for large industrial sites, they knew they needed a reliable partner. The goal was to achieve long-distance communication in environments where typical wireless or Bluetooth solutions fell short. This was a key driver behind enhancing an existing range of wearable devices that already offered Wi-Fi and Cellular connected options. Radientum’s expertise in antenna solutions provide exactly what the development needed.
Overcoming Industrial Site Communication Barriers
Extronics was planning to create an Ex wireless worker safety tag to be used on industrial sites spanning several square kilometers. The vast area ruled out typical wireless or Bluetooth solutions. They had already selected LoRa radio technology for its long-distance, low data rate communication capabilities. However, the device’s industrial Ex design limited the options for traditional off-the-shelf antennas. Extronics realized that to maintain the benefits of LoRa, a correctly designed and integrated embedded antenna was essential.
Finding the Perfect Antenna Partner
Understanding the critical role of the antenna in their device, Extronics approached Radientum. They were aware that reducing antenna performance would compromise the performance of their radio units. “The antenna is the only link to the outside world from the device,” noted Dr Julian Poyner, Head of Engineering and R&D at Extronics.

Collaborative Design and Seamless Integration
Radientum’s first step was to discuss the project’s drivers and limitations with Extronics. They prepared ideas for antenna elements and performed concept-level simulations to find a balance between performance, placement, cost, and manufacturability. The best way forward was agreed upon, incorporating opinions from mechanical designers and thoughts on manufacturability.
The antenna was then designed in detail, including connection methods and reliability aspects. Radientum maintained good and timely communication with Extronics’ mechanical and electrical teams. Design details were agreed upon promptly, and solutions serving all parties were reached. Extronics kept Radientum informed about changes in mechanics and electronics during the design phase, ensuring that these changes did not affect antenna performance.
Exceeding Communication Distance Expectations
Thanks to Radientum’s integration guidelines and Extronics’ successful electronics design, the device achieved a communication distance of 15 kilometers, far exceeding the original target of a few kilometers. This extended range reduced the need for extra gateways, as fewer could cover the larger industrial site and in turn reducing the cost of ownership for Extronics customers. The excellent antenna performance also contributed to better power management. The radio could use lower power levels during transmissions, extending the battery life of the device to ensure practical use for worker throughout their shift.
Extronics’ Satisfaction and Future Collaboration
Extronics had strong internal competence and understood the importance of following Radientum’s guidance and maintaining transparency between design teams. This collaboration resulted in an optimal overall design. Meeting Extronics’ team at an exhibition, they expressed their satisfaction with the 15-kilometer communication distance, which was beyond their expectations.
